The Cheekiness Of Chat

Just the tongue-in-cheek emoticon says it all. You can say whatever you want...almost whatever you want, anyway, and get away with it by using an emoticon. Something like "I didn't mean that...just joking, really" when you may or may not have been. That's the beauty of chat.

On a deeper level, what is it that makes it easy to chat up someone on 'chat'? Is it the knowledge that you can say anything and the other person won't see through you? Is this what allows you to mask your true emotions and feelings? Or sometimes, the other way around?

Either way, the person on the receiving end may never truly get the intended meaning. Or maybe they will but don't let on...they're probably using a complementary emoticon as well. An emoticon face-off, if you will.

Which emoticon will blink first?

It's been about a year and a half since I created an account on Facebook. I've probably changed my profile picture at least ten times. To keep up with the changes in my life, no doubt. Similarly all my friends' pics have changed too. I don't think even one has the same picture that they started out with (except for those with the old question mark).


Is it possible to find one picture that can be a constant? Not necessarily of the person itself but of 'something' even. Something that when a known person looks at makes them go "Oh, that has to be X". Is it humanly possible to identify with a few things or even just one thing for all of ones' life?

Or is life too random to prevent that?

Blast from the past

Its awesome to get back in touch with people from the past. Mostly. The time that I graduated from school and college all we had were scrapbooks and slambooks where people wrote comments, their address, phone numbers etc. Like addresses and numbers are permanent! At least here in India, all numbers from 10 years ago are different now.

Anyway, thanks to Orkut first and now, Facebook, I've managed to get back in touch with a lot of friends and acquaintances. After the initial excitement of "Oh, look who I found", you quickly realize that there really isn't much to say beyond the initial pleasanteries because its been way too long. But its still nice to see how people look after so many years, pictures of their families etc. For me, the most surprizing part is finding out the career paths that some have chosen. You sort of picture people as being the same as they were 10 years ago and when you find out how different they actually are, its pretty cool!

Here's to Orkut and Facebook for connecting people all over again.
